Do you want to learn how to build a biotech start-up?

The Oxford University Biotech Society has teamed up with SynBioUK to run our annual 8-week programme designed for teams to develop biotech business ideas. The programme will consist of in person & virtual events:

• Team formation events

• Entrepreneurship masterclasses

• Personalised mentorship

• Pitching & prizes!

You do not need to have a team, idea or background in biology to apply. You will meet people from a variety of fields interested in using biotech to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. We welcome applications from undergraduates, postgraduates and post-docs.

NCCR Bio-Inspired Materials - Summer Research projects

Undergraduate Summer Research Internship

The Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) for Bio-Inspired Materials​ is pleased to announce the annual open call for applications to its Undergraduate Summer Research Internship Program. 
Applications will be open between December 1, 2021 and January 20, 2022.

Each year, the NCCR Bio-Inspired Materials offers undergraduate students from around the world the opportunity to spend the summer break (8-12 weeks) participating in cutting-edge research within one of its research groups. The undergraduate students have the opportunity to work on a research project and to interact with leading researchers in their fields of interest and fellow students from around the world. Beyond conducting research in the hosting lab, students participate in scientific lectures, social and networking events and outings, and have the opportunity to train their language skills. At the end of the summer, the students present the results of their research projects in a poster session followed by a summer party. Travelling and accommodation are covered by the NCCR.

Note on the CoviD-19 pandemic: The current development of the Covid pandemic suggests that the program will take place in 2022 normally. However, the NCCR may be forced to make changes to the program, and eventually cancel it, depending on the situation in the Spring 2022.


Biotechnology Commercialisation Event

Speaker Bios:

Ross Upton, Co-Founder & CEO of Ultromics

Ross Upton is the founder and CEO of Ultromics, a University of Oxford spin-out technology company that has built an AI-based platform to predict patient outcomes in the field of cardiovascular imaging. The “EchoGo” platform is designed to improve both clinical outcomes in patients and save billions for healthcare systems worldwide. Ross has a broad scientific background having undertaken 4 degrees in the clinical sciences. During the last 3 years, he has built Ultromics to be one of the most prominent companies in healthcare AI, leading the creation of EchoGo which has received FDA clearance and qualified for reimbursement.
Ross has successfully raised multiple rounds of funding and was named on the 2019 Forbes 30 under 30 lists for science and healthcare.

Russ Tucker, Co-Founder & CTO of Ivy Farm

Ivy Farm’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Russ Tucker, holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Oxford University. Russ’ grandparents were butchers, but he read mechanical engineering as an undergraduate and subsequently qualified as a chartered accountant with PwC. He returned to academia at the University of Oxford, completing his PhD in biomedical engineering before joining the Boston Consulting Group as a management consultant, becoming a commercial and strategic adviser to supermarkets. Having witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by the UK’s advanced and super-efficient UK supermarkets when dealing with the inefficient and antiquated meat food chain, Russ wanted to create a British, sustainable food-technology company. By working with some of the best bioengineers and scientists in the UK, this company would develop proprietary intellectual property to deliver a break-through means of producing cultured meat – without the need for intensive farming. He approached his former PhD examiner, Professor Cathy Ye, with the idea and Ivy Farm was subsequently founded in 2019.

Marton Meszaros, COO of Novoic

Marton studied Medicine at Semmelweis University and Biochemical Engineering at UCL. He’s the first employee and COO of Novoic, where he leads the company’s clinical operations and commercial activities. Novoic is a clinical stage medical technology company developing diagnostic algorithms for the early detection of neurological and psychiatric disorders based on the way patients speak.

Information for students

The UCL Institute of Education is working with the Royal Society of Chemistry to find out more about why people study chemistry at university and why people may or may not enter chemistry careers.

We hope that you can complete a questionnaire now and tell us about your experiences and views. We hope that you could also complete another questionnaire in a year’s time to see how your experiences and views may have changed.

The questionnaire asks some questions about you, why you chose your course, how you feel about your course, and about your future plans, as well as your wider views about chemistry. The questionnaire also asks whether the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting or has impacted your studying and your career plans. You do not have to answer questions if you do not want to.

As a ‘thank you’ for those completing the questionnaire, you could be randomly selected to receive a £15 Amazon voucher.

We are also seeking volunteers to be interviewed to talk about your experiences and views in more detail. Everyone who is interviewed will receive a £15 Amazon voucher. You can volunteer to be interviewed and provide details as part of completing the questionnaire.
